Bathroom drain repair in Naples: toilet pipe, branch junction and shower
When a bathroom drain breaks, the water that escapes is dirty and often goes where you cannot see: into the floor screed or the neighbour's ceiling. In Naples and across Campania we repair toilet drain pipes, branch junctions, basin and bidet fittings and shower drains. First we work out which drain the water is coming from, then we open only where needed.

The water that comes out of a drain is dirty water: wear gloves, wash and disinfect the surfaces and keep children and animals away. If water drips from the neighbour's ceiling near light fittings or sockets, ask them to cut the power to that room. Do not cut or break grey fibre cement drain pipes: they may contain asbestos.
Recognise the problem
- The neighbour below has a stain on the ceiling right under your bathroom
- The stain gets wet only when someone showers or flushes
- Under the basin or bidet the trap drips while you empty it
- Around the shower the tiles lift or the grout stays dark
- The toilet moves and water appears at the base after flushing
The most common causes
- 1
Basin and bidet fittings
The trap and the pipe connecting it to the wall are joined by plastic rings and seals. Over time they loosen, or crack if overtightened, and leak only while the water is going down.
- 2
Toilet drain pipe
The section between the bowl and the branch junction is the largest pipe in the bathroom. It can crack, slip out of the sleeve or leak from the seal, especially after the toilet has been removed or knocked.
- 3
Cracked branch junction
The branch junction (braga), the Y piece that connects your drain to the shared stack, is often cast iron or fibre cement in old bathrooms. Over the years it cracks or separates from the stack.
- 4
Shower drain
The floor drain is the outlet with the grate at the bottom of the shower tray. If the seal under the tray gives way or the pipe comes off, water runs into the floor slab, the structure that separates your floor from the ceiling below.
What you can safely check yourself
- Use one fixture at a time and ask the neighbour to watch the ceiling: if the stain gets wet after the shower and not after the basin, you have already narrowed it down.
- Open the door under the basin, dry the trap and empty a bowl of water: a sheet of kitchen paper shows at once which ring leaks.
- If a ring of the trap leaks, try tightening it by hand, without tools: plastic cracks easily.
- Until you know which drain is broken, do not use it and, if you can, use another bathroom.
- Clean the water that has come out of the toilet and drains with gloves and disinfectant: it is not clean water.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- The leak is in the floor or in the wall and a section has to be opened
- The neighbour's stain is dripping or growing day by day
- The toilet drain pipe or the branch junction is cracked
- The shower drain leaks under the tray
- The drains are fibre cement and must be assessed before being touched

Finding the leaking drain before breaking anything
A bathroom has at least four drains, often close together under the same floor. Breaking at random costs dearly: tiles get redone that had nothing to do with it and sometimes the leak remains.
That is why we proceed by elimination, one fixture at a time. For the shower you can also plug the drain and fill the tray a little: if the stain gets wet only that way, the fault is in the seal under the tray and not in the pipe further along.
Once we know which drain is broken, we open the bare minimum and tell you beforehand where and how much it costs.
Branch junction and stack: what is yours and what is the condominium's
The drain stack, the vertical pipe that crosses all the floors, is a shared part: if it breaks, the condominium steps in. The branch junction is a more delicate question.
According to the line most followed by the Court of Cassation, the branch junction serves the single flat and is the owner's responsibility, but in the past there have been rulings to the contrary. Before the work starts, tell the administrator, above all if the leak wets other flats.
With the work open we photograph the broken pipe and the exact point where it is. Those photos settle many arguments with the neighbour, the administrator and the insurer.
Old fibre cement drains
In buildings constructed before 1992, the year asbestos was banned in Italy, stacks and branch junctions may be fibre cement, a grey material that can contain it. As long as it stays intact and nobody touches it the risk is low; cutting or breaking it releases dangerous fibres.
If during the search we find a pipe of this kind we stop and tell you. Removal and disposal are for a specialist firm; afterwards, we can redo the connection with new pipes.
Want to know what it is first? Show us
On a video call we guide you through the tests that isolate the leaking drain: one fixture at a time, watching where the water appears, at your place or the neighbour's. We also show you how to check the fittings under the basin and bidet, which sometimes can be tightened by hand. If the break is in the floor or the wall, we already know where to open.
Video consultation, up to 15 minutes: €9.90 (€14.90 on Sundays), deducted from the bill if we then come to your home.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tell whether it is the drain or the water pipe that leaks?
Watch when the water appears. If it is always there, even with everything still, a pressurised water pipe is more likely; if it arrives only after the shower or flush, it is a drain. The meter test helps clear up any doubt.
The shower drain leaks into the floor slab: do I have to redo the whole bathroom?
Almost never. Often it is enough to reach the drain, by taking out the tray or opening a small section beside it, to redo the seal or the pipe connection. The rest of the bathroom stays as it is.
How much does it cost to repair a bathroom drain in Naples?
On local price lists a major repair without building work is around 140 €. If the floor or a wall has to be opened and then closed, the price rises: we give it to you once we have found the spot and before we start.
The leak is wetting the neighbour: what do I do right away?
Stop using the suspect drain and warn the neighbour, so they can cut the power near the stain if needed. Then call us: with the elimination tests we find the right drain before opening anything.
