How to unblock a shower
In a shower the blockage is almost always hair and soap, stuck a few centimetres below the hole in the drain body: the drain with the grille under your feet. Take off the grille, pull out the filter and the little cup that acts as a trap, clean them and refit them. Often that is enough. If the water still stands, move on to the plunger and then to a spring snake.

Slow shower drain: the causes
A slow drain is almost always the first sign of a plug forming. Hair and soap stick to the filter and the cup, and every shower adds a layer. With hard water, limescale joins in and makes the film more compact.
If the drain is clean and the water still runs slowly, the cause may be the design. Flush-to-floor shower trays leave little space underneath, and they use low traps with a narrow passage. A pipe with too little slope towards the stack also leaves water standing.
A gurgle while the water drains means air is not getting through the pipe properly. It may be the start of a blockage further along, or a venting problem on the building's stack, the pipe that supplies air to the drains.
Shower tray that does not drain at all
If the water stands even with a clean drain, the blockage is beyond the trap, in the pipe under the floor or in the branch connection, where the bathroom drains join the stack. Do a test: flush the toilet and watch the shower. If water rises from the drain, the blockage is downstream and affects the whole bathroom.
In that case stop using the plunger, because you would push dirty water into the other fixtures, and call a technician. If it happens on the ground floor or the first floors and your neighbours have the same problem, the issue may be in the shared stack and you should tell the building administrator.
Showers with a linear channel, the long narrow drain next to the wall, have a filter and a trap under the grille that lift out. You clean them like a round drain, but dirt builds up along the whole channel and has to be removed from the corners too.
Chemical products and maintenance
Caustic soda drain cleaners are corrosive to skin, eyes and metals, and on a shower the grille is often metal or chrome-plated. With water standing in the tray they get diluted and do little. If you use one, do it with the tray empty, wearing gloves and goggles. Follow the label and do not mix it with other products.
Baking soda, vinegar or enzyme drain products at best help keep the pipe clean, and do little against a plug of hair. The maintenance that works is mechanical: a hair catcher and cleaning the drain once a month, before the water starts to slow down.
When to stop and call a technician
- When you flush the toilet or the washing machine empties, water comes up through the shower drain
- The tray does not drain at all even with a clean filter and cup
- The grille or the drain is stuck and cannot be taken apart without breaking it
- The neighbour below has a stain on the ceiling right under your shower
- The sewer smell stays even with a clean drain full of water
Frequently asked questions
How do I unblock a shower drain without taking anything apart?
Try the plunger, with a finger of water in the tray and the nearby drains plugged. If that is not enough, you almost always need to take off the grille: the hair plug is under it and no product really dissolves it.
Why is my shower drain still slow after cleaning it?
The plug may be further along the pipe, or the trap may be low and narrow, as in many flush-to-floor trays. If the water gurgles, there may also be an air problem in the drain. A spring snake helps you see whether the pipe is clear.
When I flush the toilet, water rises in the shower: what does it mean?
It means the blockage is beyond the shower, in the shared bathroom pipe or in the branch connection. Do not keep pushing with the plunger on the toilet or the shower, and have the drain checked.
How often should I clean the shower drain?
Once a month is a good rhythm, more often if you have long hair in the house. A hair catcher over the hole makes the intervals much longer.
How much does it cost to have a shower drain unblocked?
On quote websites in the Naples area, unblocking a drain usually costs roughly 70 to 300 €, depending on where the plug is. We cover Campania, and if the problem is in the drain body, looking at it together on a video call is often enough.
