Water leak detection in Naples: find the fault before you break anything
When the meter turns but there is not a drop in sight at home, the leak is hidden: under the floor, inside a wall, in the section coming from the meter. Pipe under the screed
In bathrooms and kitchens the pipes often run under the floor. A leak there wets the screed (the layer of cement under the tiles) and the water shows up far away, sometimes only in the flat below.

Fitting inside the wall
The points where two pipes join are the most delicate. A fitting that seeps a little at a time can take months before a stain appears.

Radiator heating system
If the heating water leaks, the meter stays still but the boiler pressure drops. It is a different search, which starts from the boiler pressure gauge (the dial that shows the pressure) instead of the meter.

A drain, not a pressurised pipe
Sometimes the damp does not come from clean water but from a leaking drain, for example the shower drain. The meter does not move and the stain grows only when someone washes.

Shared parts of the building
A leak on the riser or in a communal room can wet your wall without passing through your meter.
What you can safely check yourself
- Do the meter test with everything closed, appliances and toilet cistern included: note the reading, use no water for an hour or two and read it again.
- Repeat the test with the main valve of the flat closed. It tells you whether to search inside the flat or in the section before it.
- Observe when the damp appears: if it gets wet only after a shower or the washing machine, suspect a drain. If it is always wet, a pressurised pipe.
- For a few days, note the value on the boiler pressure gauge: if it drops for no reason, the leak must be sought on the radiator system.
- Photograph the stain every two or three days from the same spot: you will see whether it grows and in which direction.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.

How a leak under the floor is found
A proper search works by elimination. First the system is divided into sections, closing the valves and pressurising one piece at a time with a gauge: the section that loses pressure is the broken one.
Then the exact spot is pinpointed, with different instruments depending on the case: the thermal camera, which shows the colder or warmer areas where water has spread; listening with sensitive microphones for the noise of escaping water; tracer gas, a harmless gas injected into the pipe and detected where it comes out.
No instrument is enough on its own. What matters more is reasoning about how the pipes run in that particular house, and this is where the video call saves money: you arrive at the survey with a precise idea of where to look.
Hidden leak in an apartment building
A leak is called hidden when water escapes at a point you cannot see and you only notice it from the bill or from damage. In a building the first question is where it is: on your section of the system or on a shared part, such as the riser.
If your meter turns with all taps closed, the leak is after the meter, on a pipe that serves you. If instead the damp spreads but your meter is still, it is worth involving the administrator: it may come from the riser or from another flat.
For an inflated bill, ask your water utility whether there are allowances for hidden leaks and which documents they require. In any case keep the photos and the invoice for the repair.

How do I know if I have a leak under the floor?

Do you have to break the floor?
To repair the pipe, usually yes, but only where the leak is. The purpose of the search is exactly to lift one tile or a small section instead of half a bathroom.
Can the leak be on the radiator system?
Yes, and it is a separate case: the meter stays still and what drops is the boiler pressure. If you find yourself topping it up often, the leak must be sought on the heating pipes.
Can the search be done on a video call alone?
No, the instrument search needs an on-site survey. The video call is there so you do not start blind: we rule out the simple causes, work out which section to suspect and give you an idea of the costs. The 9.90 € is then deducted as a deposit.
