Flexible hoses and fittings under the fixtures
This is the most fragile point: the metal braid rusts, the seal dries out and the fitting starts to sweat. A leak here is usually visible and quick to repair.

Pierced pipe in the wall
Old galvanised iron pipes corrode from the inside. The fittings of multilayer pipes (plastic and aluminium, used in more recent systems) can also fail if badly fitted. The typical sign is a stain that keeps reappearing at the same spot.

Old isolation valves
A valve turned after years of sitting still can start to leak from the stem. It often happens just when you close it to do another job.

Section between meter and home
The pipe that runs from the meter to your flat often passes through a courtyard, under the stairs or in the stairwell. If it leaks there, you see nothing at home but the meter keeps turning.

Appliances and the toilet cistern
The supply hose of a washing machine or dishwasher, or a toilet cistern that runs constantly, make the meter turn without wetting the floor.
What you can safely check yourself
- Do the meter test: close all taps, switch off the washing machine and dishwasher, wait for the toilet cistern to finish filling. Then look at the small wheel or star on the dial: if it turns, water is going somewhere.
- For small leaks, photograph the meter numbers, use no water for at least an hour and check again. Even a litre of difference is a clue.
- Now close the main valve of the flat and go back to the meter. If it has stopped, the leak is inside the flat. If it is still turning, it is in the section between the meter and your home.
- Dry the pipes and fittings under the sink with a sheet of kitchen paper and check again after a few minutes: the spot where the paper gets wet is the one that leaks.
- If water touches sockets, power strips or the fuse board, switch off the main safety switch (salvavita) before you go near.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- The leak is in the wall or under the floor and a channel has to be opened to reach the pipe
- The galvanised iron pipe is corroded and a section must be redone
- The meter keeps turning even with the main valve of the flat closed

Burst pipe in the wall: why you should not break things at random
Faced with a stain on the wall, you feel like opening it up right there. But water runs along the pipe and inside the screed (the layer of cement under the floor), and the stain can appear a metre away from the break.
Before touching the tiles you need to work out which section leaks: you close the valves one at a time, watch the meter and reconstruct the route of the pipes. It is the first thing we do, at your home or already on a video call if you choose the remote consultation, so that if the wall does need opening, it is opened once and in the right place.

Water leak in an apartment building: who pays
As a general rule the Italian civil code (art. 1117) treats the building's water systems as common property up to the point where they branch off towards the individual flat. If the riser (the vertical pipe serving all floors) leaks, the repair is the responsibility of the condominium. If the pipe that brings water only to your home leaks, it is at your expense.
In doubtful cases, for example when the break is right at the junction between the riser and the flat, the building regulations and the administrator decide. For damage to your neighbour, insurance comes into play: yours, if you have a home policy, or the building's.

Frequently asked questions
The water meter turns with the taps closed: what does it mean?
It means there is consumption you cannot see: a leak in the pipes, a toilet cistern draining slowly or an appliance filling. Close the main valve of the flat and check again. If the meter stops, the problem is inside the home.
Can I repair a leaking flexible hose myself?
If it leaks from the nut and the hose is intact, sometimes a quarter turn with a spanner is enough, after closing the valve. If the braid is rusty or bulging, it must be replaced. A hose that bursts can flood the kitchen in a few minutes.
How much does it cost to repair a water leak in Naples?

Who pays if the leak wets the neighbour below?
It depends on where the pipe broke: the section that serves only your flat is yours, the shared riser belongs to the condominium. Tell the administrator and your insurer straight away, if you have one, and keep photos of the fault.
Should I turn off the water even if the leak is small?
If a fitting under the sink leaks, closing the small valve at that point and putting a bowl underneath is enough. If you do not know where it comes from, close the main valve when you go out and overnight, until it is repaired.
