Heat pump in Naples: is it worth it over a boiler?
Naples' climate suits heat pumps, but not every home is ready for one. Before you sign a quote, work out what system you have, how much space there is outside and what changes on your bill. The video consultation is for exactly this.
Quote before we start about 1 hourBleeding, valves, leaks, balancing

Do not open or move the outdoor unit yourself: it is heavy, contains electrical parts and, on split models, a circuit under pressure.
Recognise the problem
- The boiler is several years old and you have to decide what to replace it with
- You have solar panels or are thinking of fitting them
- You have received very different quotes and do not know how to compare them
- You want to heat your home without gas
- You have a new heat pump and do not know how to set it up
The most common causes
- 1
Radiators designed for very hot water
Old systems were sized for a boiler sending water at a high temperature. With cooler water some rooms may not reach temperature, unless a few radiators are added or changed.
- 2
Wrong capacity
A machine that is too big switches on and off often and uses more; one that is too small leaves the house cold on the worst days. The calculation has to be done on the house, not by eye.
- 3
Meter and electrical system
With a heat pump electricity consumption rises. Sometimes the meter's capacity has to be increased or a line in the fuse box upgraded.
- 4
Factory settings never touched
Weather-compensation curve, time slots and domestic hot water temperature must be adjusted to your home. Left as they come from the factory, they often use more than necessary.
What you can safely check yourself
- Gather your electricity and gas bills for the last two winters: they show how much you really use.
- Read the contracted capacity of the meter on your electricity bill.
- Photograph the radiators, the boiler and the fuse box.
- Work out where the outdoor unit could go, among balcony, terrace or courtyard, and ask the administrator for the condominium rules.
- If you already have a heat pump, note the set temperatures and time slots.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- Site survey for measurements and checking the position of the outdoor unit
- Installing or replacing the heat pump
- Adapting radiators, valves or plumbing connections
- First start-up and setting the parameters

Heat pump or condensing boiler
A condensing boiler burns gas and recovers part of the heat from the flue gases. A heat pump uses electricity to move heat from the outside air into the house, and with the mild winters of the Campanian coast it often works in good conditions.
The choice, though, depends on the house: type of radiators, insulation, space for the outdoor unit, meter capacity. With underfloor heating or generous radiators the heat pump is a natural choice; with small radiators and water that must arrive very hot it needs more careful study.
There are also hybrid systems, with a boiler and a heat pump working together and taking turns according to the cold outside. They are a middle way when replacing everything is not possible.
Solar panels, bills and incentives
With solar panels you produce part of the electricity yourself, and the bill improves mainly if the machine runs in sunny hours. Without them, the benefit depends on the ratio between the price of electricity and gas on your bills and on how well the system is sized: it is a calculation to make on your numbers, not by a general rule.
Rules on bonuses and incentives change often: before deciding, check with your accountant, on the Agenzia delle Entrate website and, for the Conto Termico, on the GSE website.
What to ask in quotes
A good quote states the machine's capacity and how it was calculated, what it includes among outdoor unit, indoor module, cylinder, connections and electrical work, and who handles first start-up and setup.
If the heat pump is a split type, with refrigerant gas pipes between the outdoor and indoor units, connecting the circuit is by law (DPR 146/2018) the job of technicians and companies with F-gas certification, recorded in the FGAS Database: ask whoever installs for the certificate. At the end of the work you must be given the declaration of conformity.
If the quotes you hold are very far apart, show them to us on a video call. Often the difference lies in what is included, more than in the price of the machine.
Want to know what it is first? Show us
On a video call we look at the radiators, the current boiler, the fuse box and the space for the outdoor unit. We explain which type of heat pump makes sense, what needs changing and how to read the quotes you receive. We then confirm measurements and technical details at the house.
Video consultation, up to 15 minutes: €9.90 (€14.90 on Sundays), deducted from the bill if we then come to your home.

Frequently asked questions
Heat pump or condensing boiler: which is better?
It depends on the house more than on the technology. With underfloor heating, good insulation and space for the outdoor unit, the heat pump has many advantages; with small radiators and a lot of heat loss, a condensing boiler or a hybrid system may make more sense.
How much does an air-to-water heat pump cost in Naples?
On the market in the Naples area, heat pump prices run from about 300 to about 8.700 €, but the low end covers small units. An air-to-water system that replaces the boiler sits at the high end of the range. The exact figure comes after the site survey, before work begins.
Is a heat pump worth it without solar panels?
It can be, but it depends on the electricity and gas rates you pay and on how the system performs in your home. With the bills from the last winters you can make a realistic comparison, instead of relying on generic estimates.
Is it better to leave the heat pump on all the time?
With underfloor heating generally yes, at a steady temperature. With radiators you can programme time slots, but avoid long shutdowns that force the machine to chase the temperature. The right settings depend on your home.
Can I keep my old radiators?
Often yes, but you need to check they are enough with cooler water. Sometimes it is enough to replace or add a radiator in the coldest rooms. We work it out by comparing the radiators' sizes with the rooms'.
