Boiler locked out: what to do
When a boiler locks out, it stops on its own because an internal check has seen something wrong. The lockout is a protection, and the code on the display says which check tripped. Often a video call is enough to read it and tell whether you can restart or whether you need the technician.

The lockout itself is not an emergency. It becomes one if you smell gas: in that case forget about the boiler, do not touch switches, lights or appliances, do not light flames, open the windows, close the gas valve at the meter only if you can reach it safely, leave and call the distributor's emergency line from outside (the free number is on your bill; Italgas is 800 900 999, free, 24 hours a day) or 112.
Recognise the problem
- The red light is on or the crossed-out flame symbol is showing
- A code with a letter and a number is flashing on the display
- The boiler went off after a storm or a power cut
- It restarts after a reset but locks out again soon after
The most common causes
- 1
Water pressure too low
Below a certain threshold the boiler will not start, so it does not run almost dry. It often happens after bleeding the radiators or because of a small leak.
- 2
Gas not arriving
Without gas the burner does not light, and after a few attempts the boiler locks out. The cause may be outside the boiler: a closed meter, work on the network, or a valve left shut after other work.
- 3
Electrode or flame detection
The electrode makes the spark and a sensor checks that the flame is there. If they are dirty or worn, the boiler cannot see the flame and stops.
- 4
Flue or condensate drain blocked
If the flue gases cannot get out properly, or the small condensate pipe is clogged, the boiler stops for safety. Condensate is the water that forms in condensing boilers.
What you can safely check yourself
- Read the code on the display and photograph it, together with the data plate showing the model.
- Check the pressure: if it is below the value in the manual, top it up from the filling valve before anything else.
- If there is no smell of gas in the house, try lighting the hob: if that does not work either, the problem is in the supply and not in the boiler.
- Press reset only once, as the manual says. If the lockout comes back, leave the boiler off.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- The lockout returns even after the reset
- The code relates to the flame, the flue gases or a temperature that is too high
- After a storm the display stays dark even though power is back
- The lockout comes together with a pressure that keeps dropping

Reset: when it makes sense and when it does not
The reset button, sometimes marked with an R or a flame symbol, restarts the boiler after a lockout. It is part of the manual and it is safe if you use it properly: once, after checking the pressure.
Pressing reset ten times in a row does not help. If the boiler keeps locking out, the internal check is reporting a real problem, and insisting can make a fault worse or hide a combustion defect.
If the boiler restarts after the reset and runs for days, the lockout was probably occasional, for example a drop in gas pressure on the network. If it returns the same day, it is time to call.
Boiler locked out after a storm
After a storm it is common to find the boiler stopped. First look at whether the main trip switch or the boiler's own switch has tripped: if the display is dark, the problem is the power. If the trip switch trips again as soon as you reset it, do not try again and leave it off.
If the display is on and shows a code, follow the usual route: pressure, then one reset. A board hit by a power surge sometimes restarts and sometimes has to be repaired or replaced. On a video call we can tell from how the display behaves.
Is a locked-out boiler dangerous?
Usually not: the lockout is exactly how the boiler puts itself in a safe state. It shuts off the burner and waits for someone to check.
It becomes risky if someone forces the situation: takes off the casing, repeats resets endlessly, tries to adjust the gas valve. These are jobs for a technician qualified for gas systems. The only real emergency is the smell of gas.
Want to know what it is first? Show us
This is the case where a video call works best. We read the code together, check the pressure and tell you whether the reset described in the manual makes sense. If the lockout returns, we can already tell from here whether the problem is in the gas, the water or the electrics.
Video consultation, up to 15 minutes: €9.90 (€14.90 on Sundays), deducted from the bill if we then come to your home.

Frequently asked questions
How many times can I press reset?
Once. If the boiler restarts after the reset and stays on, fine. If it locks out again, stop: the reset is there to clear an occasional fault, not to keep a faulty boiler running.
The boiler is locked out because of no gas: what do I do?
Check whether gas reaches other appliances, for example the hob, as long as there is no smell of gas in the house. If it does not arrive anywhere, contact your supplier or distributor. If the gas is there and the boiler keeps locking out, the problem is in the ignition and you need a technician.
What does the red light on the boiler mean?
On many models the red light shows a lockout that needs a manual reset. The exact meaning changes from brand to brand, which is why we need a photo of the display or the model written on the data plate.
How much does it cost to unlock a boiler?
If the lockout is solved on a video call, you spend 9.90 €. If a repair is needed, on the Naples market it runs from 40 to 250 € depending on the cause. We give you the exact price after the diagnosis.
