With F.28 the problem concerns the gas or the ignition: do not take anything apart and do not touch the gas valve. If you smell gas, the boiler comes second: leave lights and appliances as they are, no flames, windows open, meter valve closed only if it is easy and safe, then leave and call from outside the gas emergency line of the distributor shown on your bill (for Italgas 800 900 999, free, 24 hours a day) or 112.
Recognise the problem

The most common causes

Gas not reaching the burner
This is the most common cause of F.28: a closed meter, work on the network, or a valve closed after other work.

Too little water in the system
It is behind F.22 and can also bring up F.75. It is solved by topping up, but if the code returns there is a leak.

Pressure sensor or pump
F.75 appears when, as the pump starts, the boiler does not see the pressure change. The sensor, the pump, air in the circuit or the internal expansion vessel may be involved.

Worn ignition electrode
If the gas arrives but F.28 returns, the electrode that makes the spark and the flame detection system should be checked.
What you can safely check yourself
- Photograph the code and the data plate with the model, usually under the boiler or behind the small flap.
- Check the pressure: many Vaillant units show it on the display when you press a button, as the manual explains.
- If it is low, top up from the filling valve to the value given for your model.
- Press reset only once. On some ecoTEC models it is done by holding a button for a few seconds: follow your manual.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.

The most common Vaillant boiler error codes
F28 (ignition failure): the boiler tried to light three times without success and locked out. On the display it appears as F.28. The manual gives gas supply as the first check, then the reset. If the hob works and the error returns after a reset, the ignition and the gas valve need to be checked by a technician.
F22 (system pressure too low): there is little water in the radiator circuit. It is solved by topping up from the filling valve to the manual value. If it comes back after a few days, water is leaving somewhere, through a leak or through the safety valve discharging.
F75 (insufficient pressure change at pump start): when the pump starts, the boiler expects to see the pressure change and it does not happen. Vaillant lists among the causes the pressure sensor, the pump, low pressure, the internal expansion vessel, air in the circuit or a broken wire. Check the pressure; if it is right, the check is for a technician.

What does F28 mean on a Vaillant boiler?
That the boiler tried to light three times without success and locked out. Often the gas is not arriving, sometimes the ignition electrode is dirty or worn. Check that gas is present at the other appliances and press reset once.
How do I reset a Vaillant boiler?
It depends on the model: some have a reset button, on others you hold a button for a few seconds. The manual explains it in the troubleshooting section. Do it only once and, if the code returns, call us.
Vaillant F22: how do I top up the pressure?
With the boiler cold, slowly open the filling valve under the boiler and close it when the display or the gauge shows the manual value. If you cannot find the valve, we point it out to you on a video call.
Does F75 go away by itself?
Sometimes it appears because of low water or air after a top-up, and it disappears when the pressure is right again. If it stays with the correct pressure, the problem is in the sensor or the pump and the boiler has to be opened.
