How to clean a pellet stove
A pellet stove is cleaned cold, switched off at the panel and unplugged. Every day, or before each lighting, you empty the burn pot and clear the holes. Every few days you clean the glass and vacuum the ash with an ash vacuum. Once a year the technician does the full clean, including the flue and the internal parts.

Clean only when the stove has been switched off at the panel, is cold and is unplugged. Ash stays hot for hours: put it in a metal container with a lid, away from wooden floors and anything that burns. Do not use your household vacuum cleaner and do not take off panels or covers.
What you need
- Ash vacuum
- Brush or small paintbrush
- Damp cloth and newspaper

How often to clean a pellet stove
The exact schedule is in your model's manual, but manufacturers' guidance is similar. In the table in the Cadel manual the burn pot is cleaned every day, the glass every two or three days and the ash compartment roughly every week. Palazzetti asks you to check the burn pot every day or before each lighting and to clean the smoke chamber every two months.
Once a year you need the technician, as the same manuals say: cleaning of the combustion chamber and the exchangers, checking the gaskets, cleaning motors and fans, checking the electrics, plus the flue pipe, chimney and cowl. If the stove runs all day for months, an extra visit may be needed.
There are signs that you are putting it off too long: a low orange flame, glass that turns black in a few hours, a burn pot that gets encrusted straight away. The Cadel manual links these symptoms to a stove, flue pipe or chimney that needs cleaning.
How to clean a pellet stove at the end of the season
Before the last shutdown, let the pellets run out, or remove them from the hopper with a long-hose vacuum, as the Cadel manual advises: over the summer, leftover pellets absorb moisture. Then do a final full clean of the burn pot, housing, ash drawer and glass.
During the months out of use the stove should be unplugged from the mains. End of season is also the most convenient time for the technician's maintenance: the ash is only a few days old and by September the stove is ready. Before lighting again in autumn, manufacturers ask you to check that the flue is not blocked, for example by a nest in the cowl.
Cleaning the inside: what changes from one model to another
People who search for how to clean a pellet stove inside usually mean the combustion chamber and the exchanger. You vacuum the chamber yourself when you clean the burn pot. For the exchanger, the tubes or plates where the fumes give up heat, it depends on the model: Palazzetti asks the user to run a flexible brush through the exchange tubes every two months, while the Cadel manual puts the exchangers in the technician's annual maintenance.
The rest of the inside, meaning the smoke path, smoke fan, sensors and gaskets, is reached by removing panels and electrical connections, so it is the technician's work. Damaged gaskets should also be replaced by a technician, with original spares.
Stoves from Palazzetti, MCZ, Edilkamin, Extraflame, Thermorossi or La Nordica follow the same logic. The shape of the burn pot, the way it unclips and the position of the drawer vary. The manual for your model, which you can usually find on the manufacturer's website by searching the code, is the guide to keep to hand.
What the technician's clean costs
According to quotes published on ProntoPro, the annual clean of a pellet stove generally runs from 90 to 300 €, with many quotes between 120 and 170 € for an air stove. Stove and flue together cost more, as do hydro stoves, which also have a water circuit. These are indicative market prices.
A fixed stove that heats the house should be treated as a heating system: maintenance is noted in the system logbook, and in Campania the inspection reports go into the regional register of heating systems.
When to stop and call a technician
- You smell smoke in the house, or with the stove on you get a headache or nausea
- The glass turns black in a few hours and the flame stays low and orange even after cleaning
- The door gaskets are flattened or broken, or you find ash around the stove
- No technician has cleaned the stove and flue in the last year
- To reach the part to be cleaned you would have to take off panels or disconnect something
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my household vacuum cleaner for the ash?
No. Fine ash passes through the filters and a hidden ember can damage it or set it on fire. Use an ash vacuum, with a metal container and suitable filters.
How do I clean the blackened glass of a pellet stove?
When the stove is cold, with a damp cloth or with newspaper dampened and dipped in the ash, which works as a gentle abrasive. If it blackens again within a few hours, the problem is the combustion and the stove needs checking.
How often should the burn pot be cleaned?
Every day or before each lighting, as manufacturers ask. A burn pot with blocked holes is one of the most common causes of failed ignition.
Should I empty the hopper at the end of the season?
Yes, it is worth doing: leftover pellets absorb moisture over the summer and in autumn they crumble or struggle to light. Vacuum the sawdust at the bottom too.
How much does the annual clean of a pellet stove cost?
On the market generally between 90 and 300 €, with many quotes between 120 and 170 € for an air stove. In Naples and the rest of Campania we do it, with the price given before we start.
