Noisy boiler: what each sound means
Every boiler makes a little noise when it starts, but whistles, sharp knocks and gurgling that were not there before tell you something. The type of sound and the moment it appears say a lot. That is why on a video call we first ask you to let us hear the boiler while it is running.

A loud knock at ignition can mean that the gas is lighting late. Do not restart the boiler to see if it does it again: leave it off and have the burner and ignition checked. With a smell of gas the priority changes: open the windows, do not operate lights or appliances and do not use flames, close the gas at the meter only if it is easy and safe, leave and call the distributor's gas emergency line from outside (number on your bill; Italgas 800 900 999, free, 24 hours a day) or 112.
Recognise the problem
- A whistle or hiss when you open the hot water
- Gurgling, like boiling water, while the boiler heats
- Sharp knocks or a metallic noise when it lights
- A loud, continuous hum even when there is no demand
- Bubbling in the pipes or radiators after a top-up
The most common causes
- 1
Limescale in the domestic hot water heat exchanger
With hard water, limescale sticks where the water is heated. Small steam bubbles form and burst: that is the classic gurgling, or a whistle when you open the hot water.
- 2
Air in the system
After a top-up or work on the pipes, air can remain in the circuit. It sounds like bubbling and often comes with radiators that are only half warm.
- 3
Circulation pump
The pump, also called the circulator, pushes the water through the radiators. If it is worn or running with little water, it makes a hum or a noise like rolling gravel.
- 4
Fan and ignition
In sealed-chamber boilers a fan expels the flue gases, and if its bearings are worn it whistles. A knock at the moment of ignition, instead, concerns the burner and should be checked soon.
- 5
Pressure too low
With little water in the system the pump can draw in air and become noisy.
What you can safely check yourself
- Record a 20-30 second video with sound, at the moment when the noise is clearest.
- Note when it happens: only with hot water, only with the heating, or always.
- Read the pressure: if it is low, top it up from the filling valve to the manual value and listen to see whether the noise changes.
- If the boiler also locks out, note the code and press reset only once.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- You hear a loud knock at ignition, like a small bang
- The metallic noise gets worse week by week
- The gurgling comes together with intermittent hot water or lockouts from high temperature
- The hum continues even when the boiler should be stopped

Noise when you open the hot water
If the noise starts exactly when you open the hot tap, the first suspect is a scaled-up domestic hot water heat exchanger. The water passes through channels narrowed by limescale, overheats in some spots and produces a whistle or a sizzle.
Other signs usually appear too: the water is less hot than before, comes and goes, or the boiler locks out from high temperature. The more limescale builds up, the harder the boiler works and the more gas it uses.
The fix is a flush of the heat exchanger or a replacement, depending on how scaled it is. In areas with very hard water it is also worth considering a limescale treatment at the boiler inlet.
Knocks, hums and gurgles
A sharp knock in the pipes when you close a tap usually does not come from the boiler but from the plumbing: it is water hammer, the shock of water stopping suddenly. A knock inside the boiler at the moment it lights is a different matter, and should be looked at.
A continuous hum almost always comes from the pump or the fan. Gurgling, instead, is air: after a top-up a few days are sometimes enough for it to clear, otherwise the system has to be bled.
On a video call a few seconds of audio are enough to tell these sounds apart. It is one of the cases where the phone really helps.
Want to know what it is first? Show us
We listen to the noise over the phone while you turn on the hot water or the heating, and we look at the pressure. Air in the system and low pressure are recognised straight away. Limescale in the heat exchanger, the pump or the fan are confirmed with the boiler open, so at your home.
Video consultation, up to 15 minutes: €9.90 (€14.90 on Sundays), deducted from the bill if we then come to your home.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the boiler make noise when I open the hot water?
The most common reason is limescale in the domestic hot water heat exchanger, which makes the water boil in some spots. It can also be a very low flow or air in the pipes. Let us hear the sound and we tell you which route is more likely.
Is the metallic noise dangerous?
In itself no, but it is a sign of wear that often comes from the pump or the fan. If it grows over time, it is better to act before the part stops completely.
The boiler gurgles like a pot: what does it mean?
Almost always limescale or poor water circulation. The boiler runs hotter than it should and sooner or later locks out. Check the pressure and, if the gurgling stays, have the heat exchanger checked.
Can a new boiler make noise?
A light whoosh from the fan and the click of valves are normal. Whistles or knocks on a boiler just installed often point to air in the system or an installation detail that needs revisiting.
