Air conditioner sanitising and cleaning in Naples
Behind the filters of the split, on the coil and on the fan, dust, moisture and mould build up: that is where the stale smell comes from as soon as you switch it on. Sanitising is done at your home, taking apart the internal parts and washing them with specific products.

Before opening the panel and sliding out the filters, cut the power to the air conditioner. Do not spray water or cleaners towards the circuit board, which on many models sits on one side of the split, and do not use unstable ladders.
Recognise the problem
- A damp or cellar smell as soon as it starts
- A sewer smell from the split, especially after a few days unused
- Black specks on the fins or the fan that you can see through the vent
- Your nose tickles or you cough when the split starts
- Cooling has dropped and the filters are grey
The most common causes
- 1
Mould on coil and fan
The split works with humid air over cold, wet surfaces. If it then stays off and closed, mould grows, especially on the tangential fan, the long roller with blades that pushes the air out.
- 2
Dirty condensate tray
Water stagnating in the tray, mixed with dust and residue, forms a film that smells and sometimes blocks the drain.
- 3
Drain connected to the sewer without a trap
If the condensate tube ends in the household drain without a trap, or with a dry trap, sewer smells come back up and the split blows them into the room. The trap is the bend that holds a little water and acts as a plug against odours.

Filters never washed
Dust, hair and kitchen grease settle on the filters and from there pass to the coil, where they are much harder to remove.
What you can safely check yourself
- Switch off, cut the power, lift the front panel and slide out the filters.
- Wash them with lukewarm water and a little neutral soap, rinse and let them dry in the shade before putting them back.
- During the season repeat every two to four weeks, or as your model's manual says.
- If your model allows it, before switching off run fan-only for a few minutes: it helps dry the inside.
- If you smell sewage, look at where the condensate tube ends and photograph it.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- A damp smell that stays even with clean filters
- Visible mould on the fan or the fins
- A sewer smell coming from the split
- Annual clean before summer or, if you use it for heating, before winter

How sanitising is done
The wall below the split is protected with a collection sheet, then the front panel and filters are taken off. The coil is treated with a specific cleaner and rinsed, so the dirt runs into the sheet and not onto your sofa.
The tangential fan, the tray and the condensate tube are cleaned, checking that the water drains well. At the end everything is reassembled and a cooling test is run.
While we are there, we take a look at the outdoor unit and tell you whether its fins need cleaning.
Sprays and DIY products: what to expect
Sanitising spray cans sprayed through the grille give a pleasant smell for a few days, but they do not reach the fan and do not remove the film from the tray. They are fine between cleans, not instead of sanitising.
Avoid bleach, concentrated vinegar and direct jets of water into the split: you risk damaging the fins, the circuit board and the fan motor.
In Naples it is best to book between March and May. With the first heat, requests pile up, and you need the split just when technicians have the least room.

Frequently asked questions
How much does air conditioner sanitising cost in Naples?
For one split the market price in the Naples area is around 60-90 €. With several units in the same home the total runs roughly from 80 to 480 €, depending on how many there are and how dirty they are. You know the exact price before work starts.
How often should air conditioner filters be cleaned?
If you use it every day, every two to four weeks is a good habit; your model's manual gives the exact interval. With pets, smokers or a kitchen nearby, even more often.
Why does my air conditioner smell of sewage?
Almost always because the condensate tube discharges into the household drain without a trap, or with the trap left dry. Odours come up the tube and the split pushes them into the room. It is solved by fixing the drain; air fresheners do not help.
Can sanitising be done on a video call?
No, internal parts have to be taken apart and washed with the right equipment. On a video call we teach you to clean the filters, which you can do yourself, and work out whether the smell needs a visit.
How often is a full sanitising needed?
For a home split the recommended frequency is yearly, before the hot season. If you also use it for heating, or someone at home has allergies, consider one extra clean.
