Air conditioner dry mode: what it does and when to use it
Dry means dehumidifying, and on the remote you recognise it by the drop symbol. The split runs the fan slowly and cools only a little, so it takes moisture out of the air and the temperature drops just slightly. Use it on muggy days that are not scorching. When it is very hot, you need cooling.

What dry mode does
In dehumidifying the split uses the same circuit as cooling, but with the fan at minimum and the compressor working in intervals or at low speed. The air passes slowly over the cold coil, the moisture settles there as drops, runs into the tray and leaves through the condensate pipe.
That is why you still feel some coolness: the room cools, but less than in cool mode. It helps against the heavy air of sirocco days, when the thermometer says 28 degrees and it feels like much more.
Every split has an operating range written in the manual: on several Daikin units, for example, dehumidifying and cooling work with the room at about 18 degrees and above. For damp in a cold room in winter, a portable dehumidifier is more suitable.
What temperature to set and how much it uses
If your model lets you choose the temperature in dry mode too, start from a value close to the room's. If it does not, as on several Daikin units, the split decides by itself how much to cool while it removes moisture.
On power use there is no rule that holds for every model. In general dehumidifying uses less than cooling at full power, because the fan and compressor work more gently, but how damp the room is matters too. Some splits, such as several Samsung, show consumption on the display or in the app: that is the surest way to know for yours.
The biggest saving comes from elsewhere: with less humidity you feel fine at a higher temperature. ENEA points out that dehumidifying is often enough to remove the oppressive feeling of heat, and that two or three degrees below the outside temperature is usually enough.
Dry, cool, fan and auto: the other modes
Cool, with the snowflake, cools down to the temperature you set and removes moisture as well. Fan, with the fan icon, only moves the air: it does not cool or dehumidify, but it uses little and is useful for drying the split after use.
Auto chooses between cooling and heating by itself to hold the set temperature. Heat, with the sun, warms: on heat pump splits it is winter heating.
On the hottest days, with the sun beating on the room for hours, dehumidifying alone is usually not enough. There cooling between 26 and 28 degrees is best, the range Daikin gives in its manuals for saving energy. Even in cool mode the split removes moisture, so the heavy air goes away anyway.
When to stop and call a technician
- In dehumidifying the split drips indoors even with clean filters
- After hours of dry mode no water comes out of the outdoor pipe and the air in the house stays heavy
- Ice forms on the fins behind the filters or on the outdoor unit's pipes
- A light flashes and the split stops, in any mode
- You smell mould every time you switch it on
Frequently asked questions
Dry mode: what does it mean?
Dry means dehumidifying on an air conditioner. The split removes moisture from the air with the fan running slowly and cools only a little.
What is the dehumidifier symbol on an air conditioner?
Usually a water drop, sometimes with the word Dry. The snowflake means cooling, the sun means heating and the fan means ventilation only.
What temperature should the air conditioner's dehumidifier be set to?
It depends on the model: on some, in dry mode, the temperature cannot be adjusted at all. Where it can, choose a value close to the room's, because the aim is to dry the air.
Does the air conditioner use less power in dehumidifier mode?
Often yes, because it runs at reduced power, but not on every model and not in every condition. If your split shows consumption on the display or in the app, compare the two modes on a similar day.
How do you switch on the air conditioner's dehumidifier?
Press the Mode button until the drop appears on the remote's display, then switch on the split if it was off. The exact sequence of buttons is in your model's manual.
Can I use dry mode in winter?
With a cold room it does little, and below the limits in the manual the split may stop. For winter damp, for example in a bathroom with no window or in a ground-floor home, a portable dehumidifier works better.
