Air conditioner icing up: outdoor unit, pipes and split
First look at which mode it is in. In winter, in heating, a light frost on the outdoor unit is normal: now and then the machine stops for a few minutes to melt it. In summer, in cooling, ice signals a problem: switch off the cooling, leave only ventilation until it melts and wash the filters.

Do not scrape the ice with knives or screwdrivers and do not melt it with a hairdryer, hot water or flames: you risk puncturing a pipe or wetting the electrics. Do not open the outdoor unit's valves and do not use refill kits: only an engineer with F-gas certification works on the refrigerant.

Ice on the outdoor unit in winter: defrosting
When the split heats, the outdoor unit takes heat from the outside air and its coil becomes colder than the air itself. On cold, damp days the moisture settles on it as frost, and if it builds up the output drops.
That is why the machine defrosts by itself: for a few minutes it stops heating the home and sends heat to the outdoor unit. You see white mist come out, hear a rustle or a hiss and water drips under the motor. The Daikin manual lists white mist and the hissing among the symptoms that do not indicate a fault.
It becomes a problem when the ice no longer melts: a solid block over the whole coil, the outdoor fan jammed, continuous defrosting with the home staying cold. In the colder inland areas of Campania, also check that the defrost water under the machine does not turn into a sheet of ice.
Ice in summer: on the split or on the outdoor pipe
On the indoor unit, ice usually means too little air: dirty filters, a dusty coil, a slow indoor fan. After a good clean it often does not come back.
Frost on the outdoor unit's pipe or valves while cooling, with clean filters, points instead to low refrigerant gas. The gas runs in a closed circuit and is not used up: if it is missing there is a leak, which has to be found and repaired before refilling.
Less frequent causes are a temperature sensor reading wrongly or a split used outside the limits in the manual, for example in a room that is already very cool. In all cases, running it with ice on it strains the compressor.
Refilling the gas: why it is for the engineer
The cans sold online promise to fix it in a few minutes. Without gauges and scales, though, you do not know how much gas you are adding, and an overcharged circuit works as badly as an undercharged one. R32, the gas in recent splits, is also mildly flammable.
By law (DPR 146/2018), leak detection, repair and refilling of circuits with fluorinated gases are for engineers with F-gas certification, and the work must be recorded in the FGAS Database. Always ask whoever opens the circuit for their certificate number.
The correct sequence is always the same: find the leak, repair it, check for tightness, evacuate the circuit to remove air and moisture and only at the end charge the gas, in the amount written on the data plate.
When to stop and call a technician
- Frost or ice on the outdoor unit's pipes or valves while cooling, with clean filters
- Ice on the split comes back a few days after cleaning the filters
- In winter the outdoor unit stays a block of ice even after the defrost cycles, or the fan is stopped
- The outdoor compressor clicks repeatedly, hums or keeps stopping
- The gas has already been refilled and the problem comes back
Frequently asked questions
Why does ice form on the air conditioner's outdoor unit?
If you are using it for heating, it is winter frost that the defrost cycle melts by itself. If it happens while cooling, usually gas is missing because of a leak, and you need an engineer with F-gas certification.
There is ice on the outdoor unit's pipe. What does it mean?
With the split in cooling and clean filters, it is the typical sign of low gas in the circuit. Keep it off and have the leak found: refilling without repairing it only buys a few weeks of cooling.
Why does the indoor unit of the air conditioner ice up?
Almost always because too little air passes, with clogged filters or a dirty coil. Switch off the cooling, leave ventilation on until the ice melts and wash the filters.
How long does heat pump defrosting last?
A few minutes: on Daikin units the manual says 4 to 12 minutes. During that time the split indoors does not blow warm air and steam comes out of the outdoor unit, as expected.
Can I melt the ice with a hairdryer?
No. The manuals forbid methods to speed up defrosting other than the manufacturer's own, and with a hairdryer you risk wetting the electrics. Switch off the cooling and wait.
