Air conditioner flashing and not switching on: what to do
When a light flashes, the air conditioner is telling you what is wrong, but in a different code for each brand. Before suspecting a board fault, there are a few checks to make at the fuse box and the remote.
From €250 + VAT about 3 hoursSingle split, back to back, up to 3 m of piping, F-gas certification included

Do not open the circuit board or the outdoor unit: some components stay live even with the power off. If you smell burning or see smoke, cut the power at the fuse box and do not switch back on.
Recognise the problem
- The green light flashes and the split does not blow
- A red or orange light flashes repeatedly
- After a blackout or a storm it no longer responds to the remote
- The indoor unit comes on, the outdoor one stays still
- A letter followed by a number appears on the display
- The circuit breaker trips as soon as you switch it on
The most common causes
- 1
Remote or receiver
Flat batteries, a remote stuck in an odd function, or the split's receiver covered by a curtain. It looks like a fault and is not.
- 2
No power or protection tripped
The air conditioner's breaker in the fuse box has tripped, or after a blackout the appliance waits a few minutes before restarting to protect the compressor. Some models do not restart by themselves and must be restarted from the remote.
- 3
Communication error between the units
Indoor and outdoor units exchange signals through a cable. If the connection loosens, oxidises or is damaged, the split reports the error and the outdoor motor does not start.
- 4
Damaged circuit board
A voltage surge during a storm can burn a component or the fuse on the board, indoor or outdoor.
- 5
Sensors or start capacitor
A faulty temperature probe sends wrong data and blocks everything. A worn-out start capacitor makes the outdoor unit hum without starting.
What you can safely check yourself
- Change the remote's batteries and check that its screen lights up.
- Check in the fuse box that the air conditioner's breaker is up. If it has tripped, reset it once only.
- Try the reset: cut the power for a few minutes, restore it and wait a little before switching on.
- Count the flashes of the light and the pause between one series and the next, or note the code on the display.
- Look under the front panel for the manual power button, if your model has one: the manual shows where it is.
Never open the boiler or the gas water heater, and always switch off the power before touching an electrical appliance. If in doubt, call us.
When you need a technician at home
- The circuit breaker trips again as soon as you restore power
- The code comes back after the reset
- Burning smell or black marks near the connections
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not turn
- The code points to a board, a sensor or communication between the units

Green light, red light: the code has to be read on your model
The same green flash can mean an error on one brand, while on another it can mean the split is warming up before blowing hot air or is defrosting. That is why tables found at random online are of little use.
Note the colour of the light, how many times it flashes in a row and how long the pause lasts. With this data, and with brand and model read from the label, the meaning can be found in the technical manual.
The same goes for codes on the display, such as E1 or F3: a letter and a number can mean different things from one manufacturer to another.
After a storm or a blackout
When power returns, many splits wait a few minutes before starting the compressor: it is a protection. Wait, then switch on from the remote.
If the air conditioner does not switch on after a blackout, first look at the fuse box. If the breaker is down and trips again as soon as you raise it, do not insist: a component may be shorted, and resetting repeatedly makes the damage worse.
In storm season some people switch off the air conditioner's breaker when they are away for days. It is a simple precaution and costs nothing.
Want to know what it is first? Show us
You show us the light, we count the flashes together or read the code on the display and, with brand and model, look it up in the technical manual. We guide you through the reset the manufacturer provides and through safe electrical checks. If the code points to a board or sensor to replace, we know which part is needed before we set out.

Frequently asked questions
My air conditioner's green light is flashing: what does it mean?
It depends on the brand. On some models it is an error, on others it signals preheating or defrosting when you use it for heating. Count the flashes and check the manual, or show us on a video call.
Red light flashing and the air conditioner won't start: is it serious?
Not necessarily. Often it is a lock-out that clears with a reset, or a power supply problem. If the light comes back after the reset, the code tells us whether the fault is in the board, a sensor or the outdoor unit.
The air conditioner won't switch on after a blackout: what do I do?
Check the breaker in the fuse box, wait a few minutes and switch on again from the remote. Some models do not restart by themselves after an interruption. If it shows no sign of life, the board may have taken a voltage surge.
How much does it cost to replace the air conditioner board?
In the Naples area, replacing the circuit board costs roughly 120-220 €, depending on the model and whether the part is available. Before replacing it, make sure the fault really is there, and the error code helps a lot.
Can I reset the air conditioner myself?
Yes, in its simplest form: cut the power for a few minutes and restore it. Some models' manuals also provide a reset from the remote. Never open the board to reset it by hand.
